After Fall’s darkly romantic fairy-story romp, Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet hit the books once more for Resort, with a set impressed by One Special Summer. The fancifully illustrated travelogue of Jacqueline and Lee Bouvier’s journey to the Continent once they had been, respectively, 22 and 18, chronicles their exploits—and even a number of brushes with would-be suitors. The designer riffed on the glamour of mid-century European journey by sample and silhouette, with candy separates like A-line skirts (one boasted horsehair for a fifties fullness) and culottes. A ground-size shirtdress in a floral hammered silk was memorable; Bendet scored along with her extra-classic-impressed prints.
A daring sunflower jacquard succeeded prettily; literal nods to Bendet’s theme much less so. Whether the Alice + Olivia buyer will probably be eager to snap up a very acidic digital print of Cinque Terre with superimposed butterflies, or an intarsia bathing magnificence seen reclining on a pullover, is up for debate. A stunning sequined bomber can have wider enchantment. The assortment felt unfocused in locations, and the references have been too prolific. After all, can you actually inform the story of an entire journey in a single sitting?
